The Black Phone Horror
The director's contained scarefest stands strong even without a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, multiple disappearances has made the local kids anxious. This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, yet Chastain manages to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel
