The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
