Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A senior representative stated the vandalism left him speechless and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
