A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
